Disappointing news for fans of Scandinavia: Norwegian regional carrier Widerøe is set to terminate both of its routes to Germany ahead of the winter 2026/27 flight schedule, with no plans to resume service in the summer.
The cancellations affect direct services from Hamburg to Bergen and Munich to Bergen. Both routes were initially inaugurated in 2018, paused during the pandemic in 2020, and relaunched in 2023. Since 2024, they operated year-round, including during the winter months. Widerøe deployed its modern Embraer E190-E2 jets to Munich, while Hamburg was primarily served by Dash 8-Q400 turboprops.
That chapter is coming to an end in late October 2026. A search on Wideroe.no reveals that the last direct nonstops to Hamburg and Munich are scheduled for October 24, 2026. Beyond that date, only multi-stop connecting itineraries are available. Widerøe confirmed the termination of the Hamburg route to local newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt, and confirmed to Travel-Dealz that the Munich route will also be discontinued. The airline cited lack of route profitability as the primary driver behind the decision.
At Travel-Dealz, we regularly featured deals on these routes, as promotional sales routinely offered round-trip fares below €100. While recent changes (such as unbundling standard carry-on trolley bags) made tickets slightly less attractive, they remained among the cheapest ways to reach the Norwegian fjords.
Of course, relying on rock-bottom fares to fill cabins poses a structural hurdle for long-term route sustainability.
Winter Connectivity Drops to Just Two German Routes
Bergen is not only a major tourist gateway to the fjords, but also the southern terminus for the iconic coastal voyage operated by Hurtigruten and Havila between Bergen and Kirkenes. Most recently, five direct routes connected Germany with Bergen:
- Hamburg – Bergen (Widerøe, year-round – ending Oct 2026)
- Düsseldorf – Bergen (Eurowings, summer seasonal only)
- Berlin – Bergen (Norwegian, year-round)
- Frankfurt – Bergen (Lufthansa, year-round)
- Munich – Bergen (Lufthansa, summer seasonal only; Widerøe year-round – ending Oct 2026)
During the winter timetable, direct connectivity between Germany and Bergen will shrink sharply from four routes down to just two: Lufthansa from Frankfurt and Norwegian from Berlin. Travelers departing from Hamburg will need to connect via hubs such as Frankfurt, Copenhagen, or Oslo. From Munich, Lufthansa continues to offer five weekly flights during the summer season, but provides no direct winter service.
