The Frankfurt – Delhi route is operated with Boeing 787 Dreamliners, as is Delhi – Sydney. Depending on the configuration, there is 79 or 84 cm of seat pitch in the typical 3-3-3 seating arrangement. Boeing 777s (79 cm seat pitch) are deployed on the Delhi – Melbourne route.

On the outbound flight, you have a pleasantly short layover in Delhi (approx. 1 – 2 hours). On the return flight, it is similarly short from Melbourne, but over 7 hours long from Sydney. This brings the total travel time to about 24 to 31 hours per direction in the best-case scenario. If you stay in the transit area, you do not need a visa for India.

In some cases, there are also options with a longer layover (approx. 14 hours). However, a longer stopover might be a better choice in those instances:

Stopover in India

The fare allows for one free stopover in India (and another one for an additional €50). However, the price increases slightly due to higher taxes & fees. Here is an example with a 2-day stay in Delhi starting at €863:

The advantage of this option: You can stretch your legs between the two long-haul flights. The disadvantage: A visa is required for India (approx. €22 as an e-Visa).

Search & Book

According to the fare rules, these flights can be booked until [expiry date]. We were able to find availability for the following travel periods:

  • August to November 2026
  • February 2027 (only with a long layover in India)

Theoretically, you are allowed (according to fare rules) to stay at your destination for up to 12 months.

Searching for dates can be a bit difficult. Google Flights does not display prices in the calendar and only loads them after selecting an outbound and return date. The ITA Matrix generally finds the flights, but the calendar only works sporadically. Therefore, you may need to play around with the dates a bit to find a cheap option.

The tickets are issued in booking class U. Accordingly, there are the following options for earning miles (using Melbourne as an example):
