Back in May 2026, the Thai cabinet approved plans to reduce the maximum duration of visa-exempt stays for tourists. However, the amendment had not yet been published in the official Royal Gazette, meaning it had not formally taken effect.
That publication took place on August 31, 2026, making the change official for all entries starting September 15. For citizens of most eligible countries (including the EU, UK, US, and Canada), the maximum permitted stay without a visa drops from 60 days back down to 30 days. Travelers wishing to remain longer will need to apply for a tourist visa in advance, extend their stay locally, or leave the country (noting restrictions on border runs via land and sea).
A 30-day visa-exempt stay was historically the standard for travelers to Thailand. The allowance was temporarily doubled to 60 days in the summer of 2024 to stimulate tourism.
