Finnair Business Lounge Helsinki Bar

Oneworld member Royal Jordanian has been offering a status match to its Royal Club program for a while now. Notably, you can even obtain Oneworld Ruby status if you hold a status with several major hotel chains. Those with mid-to-high-tier airline status can match all the way up to Oneworld Sapphire.

It’s worth noting that this is not a challenge but a genuine status match. The benefits are guaranteed for 12 months after the match, and you don’t need to fly on a Royal Jordanian plane to maintain them for the first year.

However, there’s a catch: The provider statusmatch.com handles the processing and charges the following application fees:

Match Basis Silver Jay (Oneworld Ruby) Gold Sparrow (Oneworld Sapphire)
Airline Status US$49 (~€42) US$149 (~€128)
Hotel Status US$49 (~€42) Not possible

To obtain Oneworld Sapphire, you generally need an existing frequent flyer status (e.g., Miles&More, Flying Blue, or SAS EuroBonus). For Oneworld Ruby, a hotel status (Hilton, Accor, etc.) is sufficient. Residence in the following countries is required: Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Iraq, Italy, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Netherlands, Oman, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Turkey, UAE & the United Kingdom.

Process

The process is relatively self-explanatory once you’ve created an account. Here’s a summary of the steps:

1. Create an Royal Club Account

To participate, you need an account with Royal Jordanian’s frequent flyer program, Royal Club. You can create it for free at the following link:

After registration, your frequent flyer number will be displayed, which you’ll need for the next step.

2. Apply for a status match

After noting your frequent flyer number, proceed to the actual status match on rj.statusmatch.com.

In the next step, you’ll need to specify your current frequent flyer status. Then, proof will be required, which can be a physical frequent flyer card or a screenshot from the online account.

Only then will the confirmed status be granted. In the case of e.g. a Miles&More Senator, this would be the Gold Sparrow status = Oneworld Sapphire.

3. Pay

As described above, a fee of US$49 (~€42) is charged for an Oneworld Ruby status. If you want to receive the Gold Sparrow (= Oneworld Sapphire) status, the fee is US$149 (~€128).

Payment can only be made by credit card. A decision on the successful match takes up to 5 working days, and the status is valid for 12 months afterwards.

Extending Status

Royal Jordanian recently overhauled its qualification system. To maintain your matched status after the first 12 months, you must meet the following segment requirements on Oneworld flights:

  • Silver Jay (Ruby): 12 Oneworld segments within 12 months.
  • Gold Sparrow (Sapphire): 26 Oneworld segments within 12 months.
  • Platinum Hawk (Emerald): 80 Oneworld segments within 24 months.

However, only flights that earn at least one mile count toward this. Depending on the airline, some discounted booking classes may be excluded. Generally, eligible Iberia flights can be found for as little as €15 per segment.

If you are not using the status match, initial qualification follows a slightly different set of requirements:

Conclusion

While the trend of charging fees for status matches (via statusmatch.com) is frustrating, Royal Jordanian offers a direct path to status without requiring a “challenge” of actual flights. If you have Oneworld travel planned, paying US$150 (~€129) for a year of Sapphire lounge access and priority benefits can easily pay for itself in just a few trips. Even the US$49 (~€42) Ruby match is a solid deal for those who primarily want to avoid check-in queues and secure better seats.
