The cruise fare includes all meals in the main and buffet restaurants, as well as coffee and tea during main meals. Additionally, Norwegian Cruise Line offers an extensive entertainment program with shows and live music. You can also use the onboard gym free of charge.
Norwegian Cruise Line automatically applies a crew gratuity of $20 per person per day to your onboard account. However, you can request to reduce or remove this charge entirely at the reception.
The Route
Your cruise starts in Portugal’s capital, Lisbon. It is highly recommended to arrive a few days early to explore this vibrant metropolis. The ship leaves port in the afternoon, and after a relaxing day at sea, you will reach your first stop: Gran Canaria. The Norwegian Star docks in the island’s capital, Las Palmas, where the Playa de Las Canteras offers miles of fine sandy beach right in the heart of the city.
Next, the journey continues to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The city’s landmark is the Auditorio de Tenerife, a futuristic concert hall right by the waterfront. The island of La Palma is visited somewhat less frequently by cruise ships. Here, you can admire the beautifully decorated, colorful wooden balconies along the Avenida Marítima on the beach promenade.
From the Canary Islands, you will head to Funchal on the flower island of Madeira the very next day. You can take a cable car up to the mountain village of Monte and experience the traditional wicker toboggan ride back down. Another highlight is the famous local market hall, packed with exotic fruits, flowers, and fresh fish.
The Norwegian Star then sails back toward the Iberian Peninsula, first docking in Leixões near Porto. Here, you can explore the historic, UNESCO-listed Ribeira district directly along the Douro River and sample the world-famous Port wine. After a stop in La Coruña, Spain, the ship crosses over to Le Havre, France. The city was almost entirely destroyed during World War II and subsequently rebuilt by architect Auguste Perret; today, its reconstructed center is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The 11-night cruise concludes in Southampton, England.

You will need a valid passport to enter the United Kingdom. Additionally, starting April 2025, non-UK/Irish citizens (including EU citizens) are required to obtain an ETA costing £20 before arrival.
The Ship
The Norwegian Star was built in 2001 and last renovated in 2021. The ship is 294 meters long and 32 meters wide, accommodating around 2,300 passengers in 1,174 cabins. It has a maximum speed of 23 knots.
Onboard, there are 13 restaurants (some with additional charges) and 11 bars and lounges. Norwegian’s dining experience is slightly above average compared to other major cruise lines, with a more American-style cuisine.
For entertainment, the ship features a theatre, casino, and nightclub. Those looking to stay active can make use of the fitness centre, sports court, and outdoor jogging track. Additionally, the wellness area includes a sauna, beauty salon, solarium, two pools, and six whirlpools.
The onboard language is English, and the currency used is the US dollar. You can settle your final bill by credit card or cash. However, even on European routes, only US dollars are accepted as cash.
