Gulf carrier Etihad Airways currently offers a decent price for business class travel to the Maldives. With departure from Geneva, you can reach the islands in the Indian Ocean for as little as €1,481. This is a Business Class Value fare, that does not include lounge access and is non-refundable. The Comfort fare that includes lounge access, seat selection and a partial refund (€345 fee) is available for CHF 1,592 (~€1,747) on Etihad’s website.
Due to the Iran War, Etihad Airways is currently operating a very limited flight schedule. At present, around two-thirds of all Etihad flights are being canceled, and there is no foreseeable end to the crisis.
According to EU passenger rights, Etihad would at least be obliged to rebook you onto another airline for the outbound flight. However, these rights are regularly ignored by the airlines. In that case, you may have to pay upfront for an expensive replacement ticket and, if necessary, pursue reimbursement from Etihad through legal action.
In the worst-case scenario, such as a cancellation on the return flight, you could be stranded on the Maldives or the UAE and would have to cover all additional costs yourself, including replacement flights, hotels, etc. Travel and health insurance policies also generally do not apply in cases of war. In addition, most European governments issued travel warnings for the region, which also applies to transit in the Middle East.
You can find this fare with departure from the following cities:
- Geneva at €1,481 (~CHF 1,349)
- Düsseldorf at €1,510
- Frankfurt at €1,510
- Vienna at €1,511
- Copenhagen at €1,511 (~DKK 11,289)

- Warsaw at €1,523 (~PLN 6,515)
- Amsterdam at €1,611
- Brussels at €1,612
- Rome at €1,612
- Barcelona at €1,613
- Madrid at €1,613
- Milan at €1,614
- Paris at €1,615

Fights from Europe to Abu Dhabi are operated by a variety of Etihad’s long-haul fleet, but each option sees you end up in a lie-flat seat. The shorter flights to Male are currently scheduled to be Boeing 787 services, which feature lie-flat seats, too. However, Etihad may swap them for Airbus A320-family planes with recliners in a 2-2 pattern in business class.
Most EU citizens can apply for visa-on-arrival at Male airport. It allows tourists to stay on the islands for up to 30 days.
Search & Book
According to the fare rules, this deal is available until March 24, 2026, for trips with a minimum stay of at least four nights. Departures are available from April to mid-June 2026.
You can find suitable dates with the help of Google Flights. Booking directly with Etihad allows you to deal directly with the airline in case anything goes wrong. However, because of the current flood of rebooking and cancellations the airline is facing, their customer service is completely overwhelmed. Purchasing tickets from online travel agencies like trip.com might ease your way to a rebooking.
Why is booking with an airline better than with an online travel agency?
More often than not, online travel agencies offer lower fares than airlines do. We still recommend booking with the airlines directly. There are two main reasons for that:
Better Customer Service
In case any problems like delays, cancellations or missed connections arise, you can communicate directly with the airline. The airline has to take care of you because you have a contract with them.
If a travel agency issues your ticket, you may have to reach out to them first. You also depend on your OTA to forward information like flight changes instead of receiving them directly from the airline. In many cases, you may get a prime exhibition of responsibility shifting rather than problem-solving.
This especially applies to premium tickets. You don’t want to spend more than €1,000 to wind up with some budget OTA’s telephone hotline in case anything goes wrong.
Baggage and Other Fees
Economy fares not including hold luggage are industry standard by now. In most cases, travel agencies charge much higher baggage fees than the airlines themselves. If bags are not included in your fare, airlines are often the cheaper alternative.
This also applies to other things like food services, insurances or priority treatment. In almost all cases, you pay less for additional amenities when booking on the airlines’ website.
Editor’s Note: Just like Etihad’s Australia deal from yesterday, this offer is littered with red flags. In my opinion, this one is slightly worse for a couple of reasons: The price is not that much of an outlier, being stranded on the Maldives leaves you with fewer options than being stuck in Australia and the (partly) refundable fare with lounge access is more expensive. That being said, this is a gamble that might result in cheap short-term luxury travel to the Maldives.
Miles & Points
Tickets are issued in booking class P. With Etihad Guest, you can expect around 10,000 miles in the Value fare, when departing from Geneva.
Crediting to other programs should also be possible, but with many uncertainties. Most programs still list booking class P as First Class “The Residence” with 400% mileage accrual. In reality, it is quite possible that you will only receive 100% miles (i.e. around 12,100) or, in the worst case, no miles at all.

Information & Tips for Maldives
The Maldives, a tropical island nation in the Indian Ocean, is known for its overwater bungalows, coral reefs, and clear turquoise waters, making it a popular spot for snorkeling, diving, and beach relaxation. The local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR), though US dollars are widely accepted in resorts. Prices tend to be high, especially on private islands, with most essentials and activities geared toward luxury tourism. The weather is warm year-round, averaging around 28–31°C, with a dry season from November to April and a wetter monsoon season from May to October.
Transport in the Maldives is limited and varies depending on the island. There are no cities in the conventional sense—Malé, the capital, is the only urban center and is walkable due to its small size. Getting between islands typically requires travel by speedboat, ferry, or seaplane, depending on distance and location. Public ferries are cheaper but slower and less frequent, while private transfers arranged by resorts are faster but expensive. Overall, getting around can be time-consuming and dependent on weather conditions.
