Lufthansa 747 in FRA

Just two weeks ago, we reported that the Lufthansa Group had significantly increased fuel surcharges on many routes. At the time, our German site deliberately included “March 2026” in the article’s URL – to leave room for further increases down the line.

Even that turned out to be overly optimistic. The article from mid-March is already outdated. As the Iran War continues, Lufthansa has quietly raised prices yet again. Once more, all newly booked tickets are affected, regardless of whether they are paid with cash or miles. The increase is particularly noticeable on award tickets.

For example, a one-way business class flight from Frankfurt to New York now costs 48,486 miles + €835 when booked via Miles&More. A round trip comes in at 96,972 miles + €1,519 in surcharges. Of that, €1,348 consists of airline imposed surcharges, while only €171 are actual taxes and airport fees.

Up to 61% Higher Surcharges Since February 2026

Looking at the development over the past month, the increases in economy class are still relatively moderate. However, the situation is far worse in business and first class, with increases of up to 61%. And this is on top of already high surcharge levels introduced in February for transatlantic flights.

Bottom Line

Just two years ago, surcharges for transatlantic business class flights were around €500 for a round trip. While already higher than competitors, this could still make sense in the context of mileage bargains. Even before the current oil crisis, with nearly €1,000 in surcharges, Miles&More had become relatively uncompetitive. The current levels now border on the absurd.

There are no known cases of Lufthansa significantly reducing these surcharges in the past. However, at the current levels, they possibly have little choice but to lower them again. Otherwise, it would not be surprising to see customers shifting to other programs and airlines.
