The SkyTeam member SAS is currently offering flights from Europe to the archipelago of Svalbard, starting at €223. Svalbard belongs to Norway and features the northernmost commercial airport in the world, less than 1,000 km from the North Pole.

The Go Light fare only includes a personal item (40 x 30 x 15 cm). This is only attractive for frequent flyers with SkyTeam status. They receive at least one piece of checked luggage (23 kg) even on the Light fare, and EuroBonus Gold members even get 2x 23 kg. Everyone else should book a 23 kg suitcase directly, which costs an additional at €30 per direction.

We found affordable tickets from the following airports:

Hint

If you have SAS EuroBonus miles, you can also book these flights as award tickets. They cost 20,000 points + approx. at €110 for a round trip. This includes large carry-on luggage + 23 kg of checked baggage.

The surcharge for the Economy Standard fare is unusually high this time. Therefore, it may be more cost-effective (if you don’t have frequent flyer status) to add the desired services individually. Example from Berlin:

  • €264 for Economy Light (only personal item)
  • €296 for Economy Light + large carry-on (55 x 40 x 23 cm, 8 kg)
  • €324 for Economy Light + 23 kg baggage (book in the next step)
  • €377 for Economy Standard (personal item + large carry-on + 23 kg baggage)

You can also use the form below to book. We will redirect you to book directly with SAS or via Trip.com. Availability is generally from June 2026 to January 2027:

From Berlin, there are some convenient outbound flights with only one stopover in Oslo and a total travel time of just under 7 hours. In at least one direction, a second stopover is usually required, usually in Copenhagen. Check the flight times when booking. Many options include an overnight stay in Copenhagen or Oslo.

Seat pitch is usually around 74 cm. Seats at the emergency exit are now only free with EuroBonus Diamond status, no longer for EuroBonus Gold.

Search & Book

The cheapest tickets are for travel until January 2027. Bookable as part of the current SAS sale, likely until May 26, 2026.

There is no minimum or maximum stay—you can also book cheap one-way tickets.

Finding dates is somewhat difficult. Google Flights finds the flights, but does not display the correct prices in the calendar. The price calendar on the SAS website works better. However, it has the disadvantage that you cannot filter by flight times (to hide overnight layovers):

We recommend booking directly with SAS. Some connections cost significantly more there than with third-party providers via Trip.com It is best to compare both.

Stopover in Tromsø

The fare itself does not allow stopovers. If you want to stay longer in Tromsø or Oslo, you would have to book multiple individual tickets. However, this is only slightly more expensive.

Here is an example from Berlin with 4 days in Svalbard and 3 days in Tromsø. Bookable for a total price of at €277 (with personal item):

  • September 14, 2026: Berlin – Svalbard at €118
  • September 18, 2026: Svalbard – Tromsø at €89
  • September 21, 2026: Tromsø – Berlin at €70

About Svalbard

Although Svalbard is politically part of Norway, it does not have much in common with the rest of the country. Below is some information for your trip.

Info

Svalbard belongs to Norway; for most Europeans, a national ID card is sufficient for entry (Source). However, leaving the settlement of Longyearbyen is only permitted as part of a guided tour—or with a firearm.

Climate

The average annual temperature in Svalbard is -7°C; only in the summer months (June – August) do temperatures rise to up to 10°C.

There is no perfect time of year for Svalbard. From November to January, there is the polar night, meaning the sun never truly rises, with temperatures down to -15°C. Guides on-site recommended March to me. It’s a good time for snow activities, and there is sufficient daylight.

In summer, the snow has almost completely melted; you can experience the midnight sun, and boat tours (e.g., to the ghost town of Pyramiden) are possible. Afterward, the days get shorter again, and snow returns around October.

Price Level and Activities in Longyearbyen

With the exception of accommodation, Svalbard is not much more expensive than Norway itself. Meals in restaurants start at around at €20, and the only supermarket is (except for fresh fruit & vegetables) similarly priced to the mainland.

However, there is a major cost driver, and that is local tours & activities. Due to the danger posed by polar bears, the town of Longyearbyen may only be left with a weapon or a guided tour. And since you’ve seen everything in town after one day, it gets expensive quickly.

Here are some example prices (as of 2024):

  • 3-hour hiking tour from at €70
  • 4-hour kayak tour from at €100
  • Ice cave tour from at €120 (winter)
  • 4-hour zodiac boat tour to the glacier from at €150 (summer)
  • Full-day excursion to the Soviet ghost town of Pyramiden from at €200 including lunch (summer)
  • 6-hour snowmobile tour from at €200 (February to May)

A good starting point is the activities calendar, where all tours offered for your desired date are listed with prices.

Longyearbyen Summer
Even shorter hikes (like the one to the viewpoint 1 hour from the city) may only be undertaken with a tour or weapon due to the polar bear danger. The rule is sometimes ignored, but that is not recommended.

Accommodation in Longyearbyen

There are not many hotels in Longyearbyen. Larger hotels include the Radisson Blu Polar Hotel and Funken Lodge. For both, you should expect to pay between at €200 and at €400 per night, depending on the season. Significantly cheaper options would be, for example, the Coal Miners Cabin (from at €120 with a shared bathroom) or an Airbnb.

Previously, Funken Lodge could be booked at attractive prices using points for Choice Privileges. Unfortunately, Funken Lodge is no longer part of Strawberry Hotels and is therefore no longer bookable via Choice Hotels.
