Itinerary
Your journey begins before the cruise itself with a pre-cruise night in the Danish capital of Copenhagen. Depending on the arrival time of your flight, you may have some time to explore the city’s key sights. The next day, you will travel to Nuuk. This flight is included in the package price. In Greenland’s capital, the crew of the MS Fridtjof Nansen will be ready to welcome you on board.
After departing the port, the ship sets course north toward Disko Bay. On board, important safety briefings and presentations about the upcoming landings are conducted, which are mandatory to attend if you wish to participate. One of the first highlights of this cruise is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ilulissat Icefjord, home to massive icebergs in a spectacular array of white, gray, and blue hues.
The next day is dedicated to exploring the Uummannaq Fjord. Potential activities in the area include shore landings and visits to small communities such as Uummannaq or Ukkusissat. The first settlers arrived in this region roughly 4,000 years ago. On the subsequent day at sea, the ship continues northward, crossing Melville Bay.
The next five days are set aside for exploration in the Thule region. Extreme climate conditions create an isolated and challenging way of life for the residents year-round. The itinerary is adjusted daily depending on weather and ice conditions. Afterward, the ship heads south again, crossing Baffin Bay. During the two days at sea, you can attend engaging lectures or relax in one of the onboard hot tubs.
On the return journey to Nuuk, you will visit various communities in West Greenland. Potential destinations include Qeqertarsuaq, the main settlement on Disko Island, and Itilleq, a small fishing and hunting village located near the Arctic Circle. There will also be a stop in Sisimiut, Greenland’s second-largest city. After 14 nights, the expedition cruise concludes back in Nuuk, followed by your return flight to Copenhagen.
The exact itinerary depends on weather, ice conditions, and other unforeseen factors. None of the listed destinations can be guaranteed. The ship’s crew makes daily decisions on the best route to offer you the safest and most rewarding experience possible.
