The Route

The journey embarks in Valparaíso on Chile’s Pacific coast. Following a relaxing sea day, you reach Niebla at the mouth of the Valdivia River, home to the historic 17th-century Castillo de Niebla coastal fortifications offering panoramic views over the Pacific.

On October 20, the ship calls at Castro on Chiloé Island, celebrated for its colorful waterfront palafitos (stilt houses) and UNESCO-listed wooden churches. Cruising further south into Chilean Patagonia, you visit Caleta Tortel, an isolated village built entirely on stilts and wooden boardwalks nestled between mountain slopes and glacial rivers, followed by the remote settlement of Puerto Edén.

On October 24, the ship docks in Puerto Natales for an extended multi-day call, allowing ample time to explore the world-famous Torres del Paine National Park and its granite spires, turquoise lakes, and glaciers. Continuing through the intricate southern fjord systems, you cruise past the dramatic Garibaldi Glacier within Alberto de Agostini National Park.

Before concluding, the ship calls at Puerto Williams on Navarino Island—one of the southernmost permanently inhabited settlements on Earth—and attempts a navigation around the legendary Cape Horn, where the Atlantic and Pacific oceans meet. The cruise concludes in Ushuaia, Argentina, on October 31, 2026, followed by your included charter flight to Buenos Aires.

The Ship

Built in 2020, the MS Fridtjof Nansen is among the most advanced purpose-built expedition ships afloat. Designed to accommodate up to 490 passengers, its hybrid battery-propulsion technology reduces fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by approximately 20%. The ship measures 140 meters in length and 24 meters in width.

More than a traditional cruise ship, the MS Fridtjof Nansen functions as a floating scientific hub. The onboard Science Center features state-of-the-art research equipment, touch screens, and microscopes, where guests can participate in real citizen-science research projects led by an expert team of geologists, marine biologists, and polar historians.

Following days of active exploration, guests can unwind in the heated outdoor infinity pool, outdoor whirlpools, or the panoramic sauna with floor-to-ceiling sea views. Dining options comprise three distinct venues: the main restaurant Aune, casual street food at Fredheim, and fine dining at Lindstrøm (complimentary for suite guests; bookable for other stateroom categories for a surcharge of approx. €25 per person).

The primary onboard languages are English and Norwegian. The onboard currency is the Norwegian Krone (NOK), and onboard charges can be settled via major credit cards at the end of the voyage.

Flights & Getting There

Because the cruise departs from Valparaíso (via Santiago de Chile [SCL]) and finishes with an included flight from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires [EZE], you will need an open-jaw international ticket (flying into Santiago de Chile and returning from Buenos Aires). We recommend arriving at least two days early in Chile to explore Santiago and Valparaíso and protect against flight disruptions.
