Eurowings boarding on tarmac

This week, Eurowings announced a range of new status benefits for Miles&More members. However, the most interesting ones are limited to the Smart fare.

If you book this fare, Senator or HON status holders will in future be able to check in twice as much free baggage (2 × 23 kg instead of 1 × 23 kg). In addition, seats with extra legroom can be selected free of charge in this combination. Previously, even with status, this required an additional fee.

Regardless of the fare, Senators and HON Circle Members can also check in one piece of golf baggage free of charge. This even applies to the Basic fare, which normally does not include any checked baggage.

Here is a summary of the benefits:

Free extra-legroom seats:

  • Valid only in the Smart fare
  • Also applies to accompanying persons on the same booking

Additional free baggage:

  • 1 additional piece of baggage weighing 23 kg
  • Valid only in the Smart fare
  • Applies only to the status holder – not to accompanying persons

Free golf baggage:

  • Valid in all fares (Basic, Smart, BIZclass)

These benefits are communicated only for Senators and HON Circle Members. It is currently unclear whether Star Alliance Gold members from Air Canada Aeroplan or United MileagePlus will also benefit. For Frequent Travellers, nothing changes.

The changes have already been implemented on the Eurowings website.

Bottom Line

Step by step, Eurowings’ status benefits are being aligned with those of the rest of the Lufthansa Group. A first (positive) step in this direction was the introduction of lounge access in the Basic fare two years ago.

However, it should not go unmentioned that Eurowings has significantly increased the surcharge for the Smart fare in recent years. For status customers, in many cases it would be cheaper to book baggage and seat selection separately (large cabin baggage is already free from SEN status anyway). With the new benefits, however, the Smart fare may once again be worth a look.

When traveling as a couple, it may now make sense to book the Smart fare for one person and the Basic fare for the second person. This is sufficient for a total of 2 × 23 kg of free checked baggage. The second seat reservation can then simply be added separately.
