The Route
Your cruise begins in Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires. Arriving a few days before embarkation allows time to explore the vibrant La Boca neighborhood with its colorful houses, attend a traditional Tango show, or visit Plaza de Mayo and the presidential palace, Casa Rosada. In the late afternoon, the Celebrity Equinox departs port and sets course for Montevideo.
Uruguay’s capital offers numerous attractions. Visitors can sample local cuisine at Mercado del Puerto or enjoy a stroll along the Rambla waterfront promenade and Parque Rodó. The next stop is Port Stanley, the compact capital of the Falkland Islands. Home to around 2,500 residents, the town is notable for its Victorian-style wooden buildings.
On day seven, the ship navigates around historic Cape Horn, the southernmost point of South America and historically one of the most challenging nautical routes. Next is Ushuaia, considered the southernmost city in the world. Excursions to Tierra del Fuego National Park or boat tours along the Beagle Channel offer opportunities to spot sea lions, cormorants, and penguins.
Another highlight is transiting the Strait of Magellan, discovered by Ferdinand Magellan in 1520 to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The ship then calls at Punta Arenas, Chile, where excursions to Isla Magdalena offer views of Magellanic penguin colonies and other seabirds. The voyage concludes with additional stops in Puerto Madryn and Punta del Este before returning to Buenos Aires after 14 nights.

The Ship
The Celebrity Equinox is the second of five Solstice-class ships. She was launched in 2009 at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg and has 4 diesel generators that supply electricity to the Azipods (also called E-Pods) hanging at the stern. This technology minimizes vibrations and makes the ship run very smoothly.
The Equinox is a ship for quiet and stylish cruising. The special features of the ship are not slides or amusement-park attractions, but elegant luxury in the equipment. High-quality materials and spacious rooms are comfortable without being unnecessarily pompous. The decks invite you to linger and relax. Particularly noteworthy is the large lawn area on the rear upper deck. When reading, you might be irritated as to what added value something like this is supposed to bring. On site, you feel like you are in your own garden, lying down in the hammocks provided.
The food, both in the buffet and in the main restaurant, is excellent on Celebrity Cruises. Attention is paid to high-quality ingredients and good preparation. The vegetables are not overcooked and not hard, seasoned sensibly and there are many optional spices available. In the main restaurant, it gets a little better in terms of quality. It’s also much quieter than other large dining rooms.
Although it is more of a classic cruise, the passengers are by no means old. Seeing Celebrity’s general pricing, however, it is more likely to be middle-class people, especially from English-speaking countries. There are both European and American power sockets in the cabins.
